The garage doors can be easily dented, either by collisions with a vehicle or by children's antics; however, a dented door reduces the attractiveness of houses and can reduce its value. Repairing dents may be preferable to total replacement, as it saves a significant amount of money. Of course, if the door is completely recessed, it probably needs to be replaced by a professional team. However, here are some steps to solve your problem if the damage is minor:
Assess the damage first and foremost.
You will need to thoroughly check your garage door (its different parts and panels), although dents in garage door panels are easily identifiable. They do not require extensive inspection but analyzing the extent of the damage is key. Does it look small, or is it relatively large in surface area? The good news is that if it isn't too severe, it shouldn't be too problematic to fix yourself (see the next step for details).
Use a mallet, a putty knife, and some paint to get the dent out.
Disconnect the power source first to be extra safe. Safety is paramount in any type of repair work. Thankfully minor dents are easy for homeowners to repair, so if this is the case for you, here's how to fix this problem:
Place a block of wood on the protruding side of the dent if possible.
Hit the block with a rubber mallet to flatten the dent.
Sand the area with a piece of 120 grit sandpaper.
Then mix a portion of body filler of the appropriate size with a hardener into a small piece of scrap cardboard. Follow the manufacturer's recommended mixing instructions. The more hardener you add, the sooner it will start to set and harden.
Apply the filler to the indented area on the garage door's finished side with a plastic putty knife. Smooth out the material with the putty knife and fill in any remaining gaps in the door.
Allow the filler to dry, usually about 20 minutes, before sanding with 80 grit sandpaper to remove overfill and smooth rough areas.
Sand the repair with 120 grit sandpaper to further smooth the repair.
Paint the repair with a primer designed for metal applications.
Finish off the project by painting the repair or the entire garage door with paint rated for exterior metal surfaces.
