Industry Standard Recommendation:
Depending on where you live and depending on a number of other factors, you need to consider and pay attention to the material that your garage door is made of. Here is a list of some materials, and what makes them great Garage material.
1. Wood
The first garage doors were built of wood, and those seeking traditional designs and materials tend to be drawn to wood doors, which may include windows, are offered in a number of styles. They provide a warm and homely feel that people just love.
Painted wood with flat hardboard panels is the lowest-cost option. Stain-grade wood garage doors will cost you more, but they offer a natural wood warmth that can make a massive difference to a home's curb appeal. Wood doors need to be maintained and periodically refinished. Essentially, the more you pay for your wooden garage door, the better the quality will be. However, if you can’t commit to regularly maintaining your wooden garage door, this may not be the option for you.
2. Vinyl
Often more pricey than other garage door options, vinyl garage doors require no maintenance at all, and will not scratch over time, and are less likely to need replacing a few years down the line. Vinyl garage doors come in a number of colors and can be further personalized by assorted glass and finish choices. The pros of a vinyl garage door can be combined with a common "wood-look" finish and some of the cons associated with an actual wooden garage door can be eliminated.
If you’re someone that likes to regularly change the color of the doors on your home, then vinyl may not be the right choice for you, as its color is set through the resin it is created with, so you wouldn’t be able to change the color of your garage door as you would with a wooden one.
3. Aluminum
Aluminum doors share many of the characteristics of steel garage doors, and often come with optional patterned faux wood and long-lasting finishes. Aluminum is lighter and cheaper than steel, but dents are more likely to appear over time as the garage door is used. The perfect option for those looking for a low cost alternative to a wooden garage door. Aluminum garage doors require very little maintenance, and are a popular choice for this reason.
Aluminum doors are often chosen for the stylish aspect that it can bring to a home, due to the aluminum doors making a bold statement and will continue to remain stylish for years to come. If you’re looking for style over substance, an aluminum garage door is the perfect choice.
There are, of course, other materials such as fibreglass that could be used to make your garage door. However, wood, vinyl and aluminum are popular choices due to styling capabilities, durability, and over all cost. When choosing what material to use for your garage door, remember to think about ongoing costs and maintenance that you might be burdened with.
